Ik zag een geweldig inspirerende keynote speech, op de Web 2.0 expo in Berlijn, van de man die web 2.0 inhoud en vorm gaf en blijft geven: Tim O’Reilly.
Hij begint met de prikkelende vraag of we nu niet beter kunnen spreken van Web 2.Over (volgens Daniel Lyons in Newsweek), gezien het ineenstorten van de financiele stabiliteit wereldwijd. Makkelijk geld geleverd door VC-haaien is niet meer van dit moment… is er dan nog wel een toekomst voor web 2.0? De verliezers in de komende tijd zijn volgend O’Reilly de me-too-startups en de venture capitalists die deze na-aperts van de nodige dollars voorzien.
Zijn visie op creatieve startups en hun positie werd gaanderweg de presentatie duidelijk: “We’re not in an investment bubble, but a reality bubble. We need to (re)think where we’re going.” O’Reilly inspireert de aandachtig luisterende zaal verder met twee belangrijke strategische peilers voor de komende tijd:
Robust strategy 1: Work on stuff that matters!
Het wordt tijd dat we ophouden met het kopieren van bestaande web 2.0 apps en ons gaan richten op zaken die er werkelijk toe doen. Wie zit er te wachten op een volgende Facebook, LinkedIn of YouTube kloon. Door gebruik te maken van het collectief zijn we in staat om met web 2.0 toepassingen een belangrijke bijdrage te leveren aan het oplossen van wereldse problemen. O’Reilly haalt voorbeelden aan als witness.org (human rights), Benetech (fonds voor sociale startups), Google.org (ja dot.org… helpende hand en toch commercieel), wattzon.org (awareness), Mysociety.org en Everyblock (electronic governance).
Robust Strategy 2: Create more value than you capture
Maak je niet zo druk over wat er aan er onder de streep voor je overblijft, maar richt je veel meer op wat je toevoegt voor je klanten/gebruikers. De rest volgt vanzelf.
Hij besluit met een indringende boodschap waar eenieder, werkzaam in onze mooie business, eens een keer over na mag denken wat mij betreft: “Tackle (realworld) problems that are so hard that you don’t know if you can solve them.”
Sequoia Capital, 1 van de bekendere investeringsbedrijven in Amerika, heeft eerder deze week een geheime meeting gehouden. Tijdens deze meeting was veel aandacht voor de algehele malaise en de toekomst.
De presentatie, zojuist uitgelekt, beschrijft wat er mis is gegaan, waarom het herstel enige tijd kan gaan duren en wat startups kunnen doen om te overleven.
Onderstaand de lijst met bedrijven die meedoen aan Demo.com en een korte samenvatting. Ik kan me overigens aansluiten bij Robert Scoble, Man, wat is het verdomd moeilijk om even snel te kijken wat deze bedrijven doen en leveren. Als ik niet binnen 30 seconden weet wat je ermee kunt, wat het onderscheidend vermogen is, en wat het unieke is? Dan ben ik weg.
